Style Watch: Layering Cardigans

I was reading my Lucky magazine last month, or maybe the month before, I can't remember...

{... as a quick sidenote, I don't subscribe to Lucky; Lucky just inexplicably arrives in my mailbox each month. I don't know how, I don't know why, and should I choose to subscribe to a fashion magazine, it probably wouldn't be Lucky. But hey, as long as it keeps coming, free magazine, right? ...}

... and I saw a short blurb about layering cardigans. That is, wearing two cardigans. More than two I think might be overstyled and overwarm. And it's supposed to be a thing right now. Like, a style thing. That stylish people do.

The blurb says: "Prim, '50s-ish sweaters come off as cool and hipsterish when you wear two at a time. To keep the silhouette streamlined, go for middle-to-lightweight (but not sheer) versions that are cut on the slender side. Contrast trims and prints for an arty effect."

I wasn't sure how I felt about this becoming a trend, until I went to the Ann Taylor website one day and saw:

These ladies... er... actually, just the one lady twice... is definitely layering her cardigans, and she most definitely looks cute. {Can someone explain to me how to fix my hair like that??} I want both of those outfits right now. Right now, please.

So what do you think? How do you feel about this trend? Might you layer cardigans in the near future? Do you already layer your cardigans? And do you know if it's possible for me to fix my hair like the pretty lady in the pictures if it only comes down to my collarbone?

I have never considered this! As the cardigan queen, this may be opening a whole new window of possibilities.... especially when I notice that 80% off the long sleeved items in my closet happen to be cardigans.

I think one thing that makes these outfits particularly cohesive/attractive is that she seems to be wearing the same cardigan in two colors... I love it! Though I don't think my closet has the items to pull it off... yet.

And her hair is gorgeous, no idea as to how to achieve such a look... I wish!

So, I am totally wearing two cardigans right now, and I am in love!

This might be my new favorite idea ever. Who needs new clothes when I can keep remixing what I own with great ideas like this?

I'm glad you like the idea! I think you're right that the simplicity of the two Ann Taylor outfits (wearing the same cardi in different colors, one of them being a neutral) helps pull it off.

And... pictures of you wearing two cardigans? Will you post on your blog soon, please?

Hmmm.... I'll think about posting a pic on the blog. If I have a good hair day (like the Ann Taylor model [hahaha, that'll never happen]) then I will do it.

That's definitely interesting. With the weather turning negative, I will definitely give this a try. Thanks for the idea

So, Saturday I attempted that hair style (more the one on the right) and I got about a million compliments. You may have affected my style more with this post than any blog post I have ever read! I actually used my 1" flat iron twisted on an angle to create curls (my hair is naturally wavy) and then tied it loosely back to one side then I pulled it in to a loose bun, and bobby pinned what seemed out of place. It wasn't all that much work, and I was really happy with the results (and so was the husband) just thought I would share.....

Some of my friends have actually been calling me a two-cardigan-girl. I am in fashion school, and I get lots of compliments on my cardigan style. I actually wear long cardigans underneath shorter cardigans. Sometimes I wear a long cardigan as a dress with a classic roundneck cardigan on top.
